These guidelines form part of the Learning and Teaching Scotland Metadata Strategy.
The LTS Online Service is composed of internal web pages within a number of different channels and tagged external websites. Internet resources which appear on the LTS Online Service are catalogued using a modified version of the standards outlined in the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Learning Object Metadata Standard.
The following guidelines are appropriate for all content on the website.
Generally the title page of a resource and and significant other sections or pages should be tagged.
Resources can be catalogued at a high level, say a website, or at a low level such as an individual Word file.
Higher level cataloguing takes less time than lower level cataloguing, but provides less detailed information for customers searching our sites. At a detailed level, there are more resources to catalogue, but this means direct access for customers.
For example, Connected magazine could be catalogued at the home page level. However, if the individual articles are of interest in themselves, they too could be catalogued, with the result that each article could be discovered through a customer search.
