Permission to publish images of children or adults

If you want to publish photographs or video of children, you need to ensure that the appropriate permission forms have been completed and returned to LTS.

These forms have been designed to cover a range of potential uses of photos or footage, including: in print publications, digital resources (eg CD-ROMs), Glow (the Scottish schools intranet), and on other online channels used by LTS and partner organisations.

Children and under-16s

In the case of children and young people under the age of 16 we need permission from their parents, carers or guardians.

This permission form must be completed by the parents and returned to LTS.

In some cases the education establishment may say that it has already checked with all parents, it has general permission from many of them for their children to appear in photos and films, and it knows which children must not appear in photos or film. The establishment may be reluctant to approach parents again with a specific request for LTS.

In this case, please ask your contact to complete and return this form instead.

Please note: If the nature of the project means that the photos or film footage will focus closely on only a few children, LTS still needs the individual parental permission form to be completed.

As well as providing a data protection safeguard for the individuals concerned it also means that if a picture of a particular child ends up being used prominently and extensively - for example, on the LTS Online Service, in publicity materials or in the media - the parents will have had the courtesy of being informed of that potential usage.

If you are unsure about which form to use, please check with Tegwen Wallace.

Young people and adults

Finally, we also have a permission form for young people aged 16 years and over, and adults.

This does not need to be used for general photography or filming - for example at events, conferences, etc - but if you are focusing on just a few individuals, you should offer them the opportunity to complete the form.

It gives the participants a clear indication of the purposes for which their image may be used and explains that LTS will respect data protection principles when using it.
