HMIE is committed to helping children and young people learn more effectively, in order to improve their life chances.
This involves working with educationists, parents, and children themselves to explore a wide range of approaches which aim to improve young people’s achievements and the overall quality of education; and investigating research from around the world.
The Journey to Excellence builds on all these activities carried out by HMIE working with its partners in a range of different contexts. The descriptions within The Journey to Excellence and the video resources it provides, are a rich source of information and inspiration to help schools and other centres of learning take forward their improvements.
HMIE has identified five areas of excellence:
learning and teaching
vision and leadership
promoting active partnerships
involving and developing people
and fostering the right culture and ethos.
By focusing on these five areas, schools and centres can help young people make the most of their skills and abilities and achieve better outcomes.
In this way, schools can prepare their young people for life and work in a constantly changing and challenging world - a world for which they need highly developed and flexible skills and secure personal and community values.
Schools and centres need to take concerted action in these five areas to enable their learners to develop the capacities, attitudes, capabilities and skills, which are the outcomes of Curriculum for Excellence.
