Programming is a creative medium. Tools like Scratch and 2DIY demonstrate this well and Kodu is no different. Well, that is not entirely true. Unlike the previously mentioned platforms, Kodu is a 3D game building environment. If you have ever wondered how to make an Xbox type game, Kodu is a great place to start.

Kodu allows users to design, build and play new games. The completed games are visually stunning and are completely created using the tools within Kodu.

At the heart of Kodu is a well-designed user interface. The interface allows user to select tools, build terrain and even program using only the mouse or Xbox controller. Even on the PC, the Xbox controller can be used.

It is an entirely icon-based programming environment where rules are written and broken down into conditions and actions. All the coding icons use physical, real world concepts such as vision, hearing and time. Linking together code icons to form rules allow the user to define the behaviour of every object on the screen.

Kodu is an intuitive environment that should engage the learner and teacher alike. You don’t have to be a programmer to use Kodu in the classroom. However, in a Computing lesson, Kodu is a wonderful tool for introducing key concepts in object oriented programming and logic.
