For 40 years, George Watson’s College has been taking its 3rd year out of school for a fortnight in May to a wide range of inspiring locations. Known as ‘3rd Year Projects’, this annual enterprise involves around a dozen separate trips and up to 200 pupils on expeditions to far-flung wild places of the United Kingdom. Historically, the emphasis has been on personal development through shared experience and outdoor activities such as hillwalking, camping and kayaking. Over the past three years the John Muir Award has been integrated to highlight the environmental dimension of these experiences, and the value of wild places as a place to learn.
