Historic Scotland cares for 345 properties of local and national interest throughout Scotland.  They range from prehistoric sites and  medieval castles to abbeys, palaces and industrial buildings: real places where real people once lived and worked.  Visits to these historic sites can help bring Scotland’s past to life and offer the chance to create imaginative learning opportunities for learners of all ages.  Historic Scotland’s Education Unit provides a range of services for teachers interested in visiting Historic Scotland properties with their pupils/students. These include:

  • A free educational visits scheme for organised groups
  • Free preparatory visits for teachers
  • Free curriculum-linked printed support materials
  • Hazard information sheets to help prepare risk assessments
  • A travel subsidy scheme to help with transport costs
  • An annual programme of added-value activities for schools
  • CPD sessions for teachers
