The Duke of Edinburgh's Award

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a programme of enjoyable, challenging and rewarding activities of personal development for young people.

For all young people aged 14-25, this unique programme, which has been running for over 50 years, continues to grow in participant and group numbers. The Award is widely acknowledged by business as the number one ‘qualification’ that can be gained outside the formal qualifications framework.

The Award contributes to many policy agendas including Curriculum for Excellence and work with disaffected youth. It is an accreditation of the wider learning of all young people.

The Award is operating in over half of Scottish schools and in many youth clubs and voluntary organisations.

The expedition element is well known and enjoyed by most participants. Young people who are interested in the arts, culture, volunteering and many other activities can develop their skills and interests through the programme.

Its uniqueness remains, however, in social exercise and the unaccompanied expedition that all young people take part in as a ‘real’ teamwork exercise.
