Seminar descriptionThe presentation will document the development of outdoor learning within Balnacraig School over the last 15 years. From humble beginnings, making use of second-hand equipment, to the present day, which sees the school running two outdoor annexes as well as having a dedicated resource base within the school. This resource base supports a team of eight staff delivering outdoor learning in a variety of contexts.
SpeakersKenny Grahame, Balnacraig School
Speaker biographyKenny graduated in 1993 from the Outdoor Education in the Community course, Strathclyde University. Following a brief spell with Central Region Council, Kenny was employed to develop the outdoor programme at Balnacraig. The programme now involves eight staff members with varying qualifications delivering a wide range of activities both as part of the formal curriculum and recreationally. The work of the school has received positive attention from both the Care Commision and the HMIE. As a result, staff from the school have presented to and on behalf of both of these organisations. Kenny is involved in a wide range of outdoor activities both on water and on land, open canoe expeditioning being a particular passion. Kenny became a business person in 1995, setting up KGOLDT following requests from a number of agencies to provide support, primarily involving team development. Kenny also works on a freelance basis with several organisations, delivering team and management development courses; this work is invaluable in keeping the school abreast of new ideas.
