What is the Schools' Global Footprint

Graphic of globe with footprints

Our Earth has a limited amount of resources and we are currently not living within its resource capacity.  The Schools’ Global Footprint is a straightforward way to measure your school’s ‘Ecological Footprint’ - its impact on the planet.

At school food is eaten and water is drunk. Energy is used to heat and light classrooms and to travel to school. Clothes, classrooms and the building itself are all provided from nature’s resources.

The Schools’ Global Footprint helps pupils to calculate the amount of resources they and their school uses compared with what is available in the world.  When aligned with the Eco Schools programme this provides a useful process for identifying and implementing solutions that can help reduce this impact.

‘Our school footprint is large but, hopefully we can reduce it through greater awareness of global issues. I think it’s important that we know what the problems are so that we can change the way we act in school and outside’
