As part of the UK shared framework for sustainable development, The Scottish Government set out its strategy for working towards sustainable development in the document Choosing Our Future (2005). This document outlined the measures and approaches that Scotland would be adopting in order to turn this framework into action within the 4 core concepts.
Looking at how goods and services are produced, the impacts of products and materials across their whole lifecycle and building on people's awareness of social and environmental impacts.
Highlighting the need to secure profound changes in the way the country generates and uses energy and other activities that release greenhouse gases.
Building a better understanding of environmental limits, environmental enhancement and recovery where the environment is most degraded to ensure a decent environment for everyone.
Creating communities that embody the principles of sustainable development locally.
Many schools are already covering a number of these issues through subjects and the types of cross-curricular themes such as environmental education and citizenship mentioned above.
However, it is envisaged that the profile of sustainable development will be enhanced in accordance with the Minister of Education's aspirations, and that it will feature within A Curriculum for Excellence and be given more prominence within subjects and throughout most cross-curricular-themes (CCTs).
