Young carers

Young carers are children and young people who look after someone in their family who has an illness, a disability, a mental health problem or a substance misuse problem. Young carers often take on both practical and emotional caring.

Young carers are not always easy to identify but teachers may be an important point of contact for a young carer to speak to. As well as receiving additional support for learning where this is judged to be needed, a child or young person who is a young carer may benefit from support from multiple agencies and services.
