This unit is all about helping children to observe and remember things that they have seen or been shown.
Remembering is an important part of learning. There's not much point learning things if you can't remember them later. By giving children ways of remembering information, we can make it easier for them to become successful learners. In this unit, remembering is made easier by reminding children to make a mental picture of what has to be remembered.
There are several other units in this series, at different levels and ages, that can be used to build a whole set of skills for remembering.
'Kim's game' is a memory game, where a tray of objects is briefly shown to a group of observers. The tray is taken away again and the observers have to list from memory as many of the objects as possible. In this version there are a number of activities where children are encouraged to use colour, position and features to remember different animals from colourful drawn images.
You could try playing this game with your child or have a go yourself. If either of you finds it difficult to remember, give yourself a hook to remember things by. What colour was the animal? Which animals were blinking? Which animal was it next to? Was it at the top or the bottom of the screen? Try to remember a colour, place, a position or an action to help you get the answers right.
