Memory skills

Remembering things is an important skill for students. While students are engaged in having to discuss, learn and research facts, they also have to be able to retain them and to use them when it matters.

In this series of learning materials, there are a number of units that look at different methods and ways of remembering. In this unit, the focus is on finding ways of learning that are most suited to the way in which different people learn. Research suggests that we all have different learning styles. For example, visual learners remember best when they see things as pictures or diagrams, whereas auditory learners learn from listening.

Students may find it helpful to know what style of learning suits them best and to use the strategies that they find most helpful. They are also encouraged to practise other ways of learning and to build up a number of useful strategies to help with different learning tasks.

You might enjoy working through this unit on learning styles yourself. Memory doesn't improve with age, and you may learn a few new strategies to try out yourself!
