Learning in context

The object of this short unit is to demonstrate to students the benefits of having knowledge of learning that goes beyond what is provided in lessons and lectures.

The unit looks at opportunities for informal learning outside the classroom, and provides links to the websites of organisations that provide opportunities for volunteering.

Students are introduced to the concept of lifelong learning and the way in which skills and expertise can be developed from taking part in activities as diverse as joining a drama group or a sports team, running a youth club, or participating in a uniformed organisation.

This is a summary of learning that takes place outside the classroom.

Extension

  • Ask students to collect leaflets from libraries and other venues. Discuss the range of activities on offer and what the benefits of doing them might be.
  • Discuss the range of activities that students are currently involved in. Do a brainstorm of the collective skills in the class. Find out if they can identify which of these might be transferable skills and whether they might be able to use them in another context.
  • Ask students to find out what activities are available for local students. Ask them to write a letter to an MP or a councillor suggesting what further opportunities could be offered to young people to learn in the community. They should focus on the learning and skills acquired that would benefit the community at large and justify the expense.
  • Ask students to write a letter of application for a job or a place at university that makes use of the skills they have acquired both inside and outside of school.
