Classification is a way of organising information to make sense of the world around us. This unit introduces children to the idea of classification and then looks at formal systems of classification used in science.

If the idea of classification is new to you, think about the classified ads in local newspapers and how they are grouped into categories. The unit on Library classification in Information Literacy is another example of classification.

This unit uses part of the periodic table of chemical elements, and the classification of animals. It is possible to learn about these topics through the activities, even if you don't know much about them beforehand. This is a unit where you can learn from your child, or they can learn from you, or you can learn together.
