Curriculum for Excellence in Brechin
Our Scottish Executive funded Moving Image Education (MIE) project in Brechin has seen MIE embedded across an entire primary school cluster, particularly using work with moving images to deliver traditional literacy teaching. The project is being independently evaluated by the Faculty of Education, University of Glasgow.
In their interim report they praised the project as a 'significant shift in pedagogy away from the teacher expert model in which pupils are largely passive learners towards discovery learning in which the teacher acts as mediator, simultaneously supporting learning for those who may be struggling in the immediate context, whilst stretching the learning of pupils displaying a high level of ability at that time'.
The teachers involved audited their practices in delivering the project against the four themes of Curriculum for Excellence; you can download their findings from the education section of the Scottish Screen website.

Early years education
Scottish Screen has currently seconded an early years specialist to develop a model of moving image education for early years children. One of the highlights of this project so far has been the screening of two films made by children under 5 on a big screen at Angus Digital Media Centre.
Moving Image Education website
Scottish Screen has supported the development of a major new online resource for moving image education. Filmmakers D Fie Foe and design specialists Design is Central have collaborated on www.movingimageeducation.org/create, a detailed and user-friendly step-by-step guide to filmmaking with young people. The site is continuing to develop to cover the analysis and exploration of moving image texts.
Work with ‘NEET’ young people
In partnership with Scottish Enterprise Glasgow, Scottish Screen has been working with training providers in Glasgow to provide moving image education for young people not in education, employment, or training (NEET).
Professional development
Scottish Screen is committed to ensuring that the teaching profession is confident in being able to deliver moving image education at all levels. To assist with this we have developed in partnership with University of Glasgow two Chartered Teacher modules in moving image education. Find out more by reading the Chartered Teachers information on the Glasgow University website
Scottish Screen is also currently involved in professional development for schools in Edinburgh, Highland and South Lanarkshire.
