Seminar Description

Adults working with young (or older) people, often seek ways to understand the key to motivating people, especially when the odds are stacked against them and when set-backs can all too easily create a sense of hopelessness and undermine success.

Set within the framework of a Curriculum for Excellence, this seminar will consider self-motivation against the odds and what lessons about meeting challenge and coping with ‘failure’  can be learned through powerful and inspirational role models.

Hilda De Felice, Learning Unlimited

Speaker biography

With experience at all levels in Scottish secondary schools, Hilda was previously head teacher of St Luke’s High School in East Renfrewshire until 2000, leading the school to many ground-breaking achievements – Investors in People, Scotland’s Health at Work and notable improvements in academic results over a sustained period of time which brought the St Luke’s into the top fifty state schools in the country. The school was the first in Scotland to host a visit from Tony Buzan, originator of Mind Mapping and Hilda is now a Qualified Buzan Instructor.

Since becoming an educational consultant in February 2000, Hilda has worked extensively throughout Scotland and parts of England with thousands of teachers and some 16,000 young people. She has designed and taught programmes on Confidence-building, Resilience, Exam preparation, Nutrition, Hydration and Movement and the DyNAmic Futures Programme commissioned by the Scottish Executive FlaT Project (Future Learning and Teaching). The programme is designed to address emotional intelligence and confidence issues and has had considerable success with vulnerable children particularly at the point of transition from primary school to secondary.

Hilda was also organiser of a highly successful conference which brought the eminent psychologist Martin Seligman to the Glasgow Concert Hall in November 2003 for a day seminar with teachers, psychologists and representatives from social work and completed the Authentic Happiness Coaching Program in April 2005. As part of her professional activity, Hilda has addressed numerous gatherings within education circles at home and abroad including Japan and USA.

She likes to take a ‘people-centred approach’ to learning and leadership and since October 2004 has been a director with Learning Unlimited, Scotland’s most successful teacher development agency.
