Science Small Grants Scheme

This session will showcase projects funded through the scheme. The scheme is taking a novel approach to boost science skills and knowledge in Scotland’s schools by supporting teachers’ innovative ideas that creatively employ science to address the transition issues.
Christina France will present Gracemount High School’s project funded in Round 1. They have established a Science Resource Centre which supports a science club for primary and secondary and the cluster science lessons. This year, through further funding, they are expanding the science club and creating a new cross-curricular project on flight and movement.
Iain Stewart will present Preston Lodge High School’s project funded in Round 2. This year S1 pupils will work with senior mentors scripting, producing and filming short scientific dramas based on current science. The films will be distributed to the primaries as preparation for later debating sessions between S1 and P7 students.

After studying Chemical and Process Engineering at Strathclyde University, Elsa undertook a PhD in the Bioengineering Department, working on an artificial liver project. As a research associate at Heriot-Watt University in the biomedical field she began participating in various schemes and initiatives, such as Science and Engineering Ambassadors, Nuffield Studentships, the Royal Society Partnership Grants and the BA's Fun with Food Workshops. After discussing the importance of enthusing and capturing people’s fascination at an early age, when the desire to explore is natural, she set up the science communication company Brighter Exciting Science & Technology (BES&T) Ltd with Briony Curtis.
