Seminar Description

Over the last few years Scotland has seen a significant growth in the number of children of migrant workers attending our schools. This has brought challenges and opportunities and it has focussed attention on several key issues: migration and our economy; diversity within EAL cohorts; the role of additional support in classrooms; political dimensions; the place of equality, justice and anti-racism in our curriculum.

This seminar will take an overview on how well we have responded to the educational challenge of the latest group of migrants to make Scotland their home, and consider where we are in relation to other groups of bilingual learners in our schools. It will attempt to ask the questions that need to be answered if our system is not to stand accused of ‘failing’ bilingual learners.
