Seminar DateThursday 25 September

Duration45 minutes
Seminar Description

Artists and tutors are working together to plan and deliver strands of the student teacher curriculum in Aberdeen University through an initiative funded by the Scottish Arts Council.  The grant has allowed Aberdeen City Arts Education team to collaborate with School of Education, University of Aberdeen  in developing the elective Arts as a Tool for Learning Across the Curriculum (ATLAC).

Creativity in lesson planning and delivery is an essential skill with the introduction of a Curriculum for Excellence and student teachers are getting a head start at Aberdeen University by putting their minds together with artists in thinking about cross-curricula lesson planning approaches.

Experiential and Active learning is the thread running through the sessions, whether it is learning maths through dance, making a film about historical characters, or taking in science through music. Sessions always address specific learning outcomes; how can you use a musical instrument to teach children about vibration? Or look at the issue of prejudice through drama?

ATLAC is contributing to research being conducted through Scottish Teachers for a New Era (STNE) which aims to create the new teacher for the 21st century; a lifelong learner with an inquiring mind. Come and talk to those involved in the project and take part in a practical exercise to demonstrate the ATLAC approach.
