Enterprise in Education has been at the forefront of Scottish education for the past five or six years though the Determined to Succeed strategy. It has proved to be an excellent vehicle for engaging teachers and pupils in developing an awareness of the world of work, career choices, entrepreneurship and opportunities for partnerships with employers. The Scottish Government has extended the financial support for Determined to Succeed over the next three years. Fiona Hyslop, in the recently released Skills for Scotland report, wrote: “We are committed to developing Scotland's worldwide reputation for excellence in enterprise education. We need to continue to create an enterprising culture in our schools .......” The Pathways Through Enterprise platform aims to take individuals through several connected presentations of enterprise in education, showing how it can be monitored, evaluated, further developed and supported. Pathway 2. Look Who's Talking Too One of the four strands of enterprise in education is “experience and understand the world of work”. This presentation by Wardie Primary School from the City of Edinburgh Council demonstrates how, as part of national Enterprise Week 2007, a primary school initiated a whole school approach to introducing the world of work to their pupils. A host of individuals, many of them parents, participated in the school's “Wardie to Work” initiative over the five days and explained to the pupils their world of work role. This unique integrated teaching and learning approach culminated on the Friday with every child in the school dressing up in clothes appropriate to the career they would like to pursue and giving a presentation to a school assembly. |
