Seminar Description

This session will describe a project, funded by AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust, which has involved teachers in developing, piloting and refining materials and approaches to encourage discussion in the classroom.

In the session we will explore and discuss activities which aim to:

• Encourage cross curricular working
• Promote meaningful discussion in the classroom
• Relate to topical science and health issues
• Provide teachers with ideas which help to introduce controversial topics
• Encourage pupils to develop, and to be able to express, informed views

The topics which are currently being developed relate to the following key areas of science and health:
• Diet, diabetes and obesity
• The liver and alcohol
• Vaccines and vaccination

Participants will have an opportunity to take part in the activities and to meet some of the teachers who have been working on the project. The emphasis will be on trying out the resources and approaches which include role plays, short debates, card-based activities, and engaging in real life stories.
