Challenging Sectarianism Through Education

Seminar Description

The education movement to challenge sectarianism is developing at a rapid rate, with growing numbers of schools and youth groups developing approaches to addressing a form of prejudice familiar to people in communities throughout Scotland.

Sectarianism manifests itself in attitudes and behaviours which, although typically focused on Catholic/Protestant cultures, can have a damaging impact on people of all backgrounds and faiths.

The introduction of the Curriculum for Excellence – as well as some key work by HMIe - has played a significant role in encouraging educationists to build positive momentum at grassroots level.

Failing to educate pupils on sectarianism leaves young people vulnerable to the damaging impact prejudice can have on their lives.

Engaging them in the challenge can empower pupils to develop more independent minds and builds their capacities for being responsible citizens who promote the health and wellbeing of their communities.

The seminar will take an interactive approach to raising our understanding of sectarianism and how it impacts on people and society.

There will be a focus on resources, good practice, and mainstreaming anti-sectarianism education. Participants can develop confidence and motivation for delivering effective approaches to educate young people on this vital issue.
