Seminar Description

A “hands on” resource with familiar materials from dominoes to picture frames, that will fill pupils with enthusiasm, have them discussing problems and not realising they are doing maths.

To hear pupils exclaim “ brilliant” after a maths class must be every teacher’s dream.

Originally developed by Liverpool Mathematical Society to celebrate their centenary in 1999 with 100 puzzles to support transition from primary to secondary this resource now spans all levels with the development of box 0 “the early years” currently under review.

Puzzles are organised into boxes containing 25 mixed ability puzzles. The resource gives teachers an opportunity to observe pupils learning independently and opens up the possibility for discussion and creative thinking.

This showcase allows teachers the opportunity to try out a selection from boxes 2 -12.suitable for stages 2, 3, 4 and 5 and also watch pupils “in action”.

There is also a chance to see the two latest boxes 11 and 12 know as “Reality Maths”. Although made up for pupils in the upper school not taking their study of mathematics into further education these boxes are also proving very successful for pupils who have covered the course work but need to develop a maturity of approaches to solving mathematical problems. Good also for boosting the confidence of pupils with pre exam nerves.

The problems come in CD form and can then be transformed into the A3 laminates as required.

The CD also provides the problems in 4 languages enriching not only the mathematical thinking of pupils and teachers but making cross curricular maths activity days even more fun.
Parents too can easily be encouraged to participate by being helpers or display a few puzzles at parent’s evenings.
The possibilities for this resource are endless To find out more and
