Seminar Description

As leaders in the field of dance and dance education Scottish Ballet (SB), Scottish Dance Theatre (SDT) and YDance are ideally placed to discuss the role of dance within the new curriculum for excellence and offer best practice guidelines for educational professionals.

This seminar will focus on working within the primary age group and how dance can be used to achieve outcomes laid out in both Expressive Arts and Health and Wellbeing outcomes. It will also explore the cross curricular possibilities this flexible art form offers and how it can be fully integrated into a subject based curricular programme. The seminar will involve a question and answer session to allow participants to explore specific areas of interest.

Speaker biography

Yvonne Young (Company Dance Development Officer for YDance) Yvonne graduated from Strathclyde University in 2000 with a BA Hon in Community Arts. After that she worked throughout Scotland as a freelance dance artist before joining YDance in 2003 as a dance worker on the 321 Go! Project. Yvonne has been a Dance Development Officer with YDance since 2006.

Ailsa-Mary Gold (Associate Director Education for Scottish Ballet) Ailsa-Mary graduated from the Laban Centre for Movement and Dance, London in 1995 with a BA (Hons) in Dance Theatre and shortly afterwards became an Associate of the Imperial Society of the Teachers of Dancing (Cecchetti Branch). She has worked extensively across Scotland as an Independant Dance Artist; teaching, lecturing, choreographing and performing in both formal and community settings.

She has also worked extensively within the Further Education System and in partnership with many Scottish Local Authorities, including a residency for the Highland Council, funded by the Scottish Arts Council in 2000. She was appointed Associate Director Education for Scottish Ballet in October 2005.

Dawn Hartley (Education Manager for Scottish Dance Theatre) Originally from Ayrshire, Dawn trained in dance at Bush-Davies School, East Grinstead and London Contemporary Dance School. She has worked extensively as a choreographer, performer and teacher, including working with Bosnian children in exile in Slovenia, performing in Georgia and teaching Opera and Drama students in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

From 1999 to 2006, Dawn worked as a Dance Artist with East Lothian Council based at Brunton Theatre and she also performed with Company Chordelia in 2003, 2004 and 2005. Dawn joined Scottish Dance Theatre as Education Manager in January 2007.
