‘The Next Factor’ – The Developing Role of CLD in Activity Agreements and the Senior Phase of Learning

CodeD2F
Seminar DateThursday 22 September
Start Time09:30
Duration45 minutes
Seminar DescriptionThrough 16+ Learning Choices, eligible young people in Scotland are now guaranteed an offer of post-16 learning. As this ‘Senior Phase’ of the Curriculum for Excellence has developed, so too have local approaches to post-school learning in community-based settings. The North Lanarkshire Activity Agreement aims to provide young people aged 16-19 with a flexible, personalised programme of learning.

The success of the initiative has been largely attributed to its youth work approach, working directly within local communities. Over 300 young people have so far signed up to an Activity Agreement. Sixty percent of those who have since left their Agreement have moved directly onto a positive destination. Attendance figures also remain high, despite the fact that the majority of learners were previously noted as having ‘low attainment’ at school und just under a third had persistently truanted.

This session will aim to look at the recent development of the 16+ Learning Choices strategy, its impact on CLD services, and the issues which are likely to face those proving the senior phase or learning in the future. Using the NL Activity Agreement as an example, the session will discuss new methods of post-16 learning and will allow participants to highlight their own examples of good practice from across Scotland.
