Seminar DateThursday 25 September

Seminar Description

A host of publications from The Journey to Excellence to Leadership for Learning call upon school leaders to put learning and teaching at the forefront of all their activities.

As The Journey to Excellence states of leaders at all levels:Leaders are lead learners, making class visits, giving feedback, sharing insights widely and stimulating self-evaluation.

They prompt an on-going focus on the craft of teaching. They share the findings of research.

While a demanding agenda for busy leaders, there are huge pay-offs in terms of all pupils' learning, regardless of their background, for the schools that get this right.

This seminar will:

• explore the role of leaders in developing effective Learning and Teaching

• examine innovative methods of supportive lesson observation

• outline some simple methods to shape a school culture that sustains learning for all

• develop an understanding of how adult learning contributes to school improvement

• investigate the role of leaders as 'lead learners'.

The seminar will also unpack some key learning from The Scottish Government's 'Learning Rounds' pilots, where groups of staff are involved in lesson observation and the rich and formative dialogue that follows it.
