During the pilot, Arts Across the Curriculum, there was strong feeling that the underpinning principals should be further developed as an approach to learning and teaching, through Initial Teacher Training. This was even more apparent as newly trained teachers are expected to implement a Curriculum for Excellence, with all the challenges and opportunities that brings. In Aberdeen, the Arts Education Team entered into a partnership with the University of Aberdeen, School of Education, to develop ATLAC (Arts as a Tool for Learning Across the Curriculum) as part of the Action Research project Scottish Teachers for a New Era (STNE). The Scottish Arts Council funded the project and match funding (for research) was made available from Aberdeen City Council and the University. Creativity in lesson planning and delivery is an essential skill with the introduction of a Curriculum for Excellence and student teachers in Aberdeen are getting a head start. Artists and lecturers have been team planning and teaching strands of the student teacher curriculum with the B Ed 3 and 4 students. Experiential and Active learning is the thread running through the sessions, and the cross curricular learning taking place is generating an unprecedented sense of fun and opportunity among the students and lecturers alike. This seminar will examine in a practical way the implications of cross curricular working with professional artists, will showcase some examples, and will offer a practical session that demonstrates the ATLAC approach. |
