Seminar Description

The theme of the presentation is excellence which has relevance for both schools and colleges, particularly in the context of Curriculum for Excellence:

  • outlining customised programmes for education
  • capacity building
  • talent management and succession planning
  • demonstrating tips which can be used by practitioners in their own environments

This seminar reports on work currently being undertaken by Scotland's Colleges as part of an initiative to provide direction and support for the Scottish further education sector and improve leadership skills in view of the sector demographic profile and identified potential skills shortages.

Target programmes for middle and senior managers, both academic and functional specialists, have been devised to provide a platform for succession planning.

The programmes are aimed at enabling managers to function effectively as college leaders, as senior team members, and as functional specialists and provide a platform for future college leadership roles.

The programmes run on a rolling basis to fit with the demands and practicalities of the role of managers, ensuring that participants have access to tailored learning support throughout the programme.

The SCoPE programme aimed at middle managers has four key objectives under the headings of Commit, Connect, Calibrate and Collect. The Leadership programme for senior managers identifies a demand for a focused experience that stretches individuals, extends knowledge, builds capability for present and future leadership roles.

The underlying philosophy is that participants have different learning preferences, which will be recognized by offering flexible learning options.

Opportunities for questions and group discussion of the transferability of the model will be encouraged.
