Seminar Description

In session 2007-2008, almost 1800 of our young people in S3/4 are engaged in vocational training courses which they study alongside the core subjects such as Maths, English, Science etc. In curricular areas where they are available pupils follow SQA accredited Skills for Work courses. A wide range of courses is available including:

• Construction Crafts

• Hospitality

• Early Education and Childcare

• Hairdressing

• Beauty Care

• Auto Mechanics

• Horticulture

• Engineering

• Sport and Recreation

• Call Centre Training

• Rural Skills

One of the defining features of North Lanarkshire's strategy for vocational education is a commitment to in-school delivery with college lecturers delivering within bespoke areas which have been developed in school. About 80 percent of all vocational delivery takes place within the school setting. This strategy has the following advantages:

• Less time wasted in transporting pupils

• Reduced transport costs

• Continuity of learning environment

• Capacity not restricted by college accommodation

• Vocational Education seen to have same standing as other subjects

• Schools have control over the learning environment
