Seminar Description

An Innovative Collaboration between Children / Staff / Authorities

The project was initially developed by Principal Teacher Lynne Lewis, East Lothian and Acting Principal Teacher Anne Louise Nicholson, Renfrewshire. It has grown from a single idea into a full blown national project involving 5 schools around Scotland. GLOW was embedded throughout the project, with children as young as 4 and 5 years using the technology in a variety of ways, within a challenging, enjoyable but meaningful context.

Aiming to raise literacy skills through enhanced learning opportunities, the project has resulted in children leading the learning, helping to direct the project along the way. The project has involved staff focusing on new methods of teaching and learning, supporting each other along the way and has formed new bonds that we hope to keep for future collaborative work.

Children have clearly been motivated by the ability to share and collaborate with children in other schools and staff have recognised the increased interest in reading and discussing books within their classrooms. This motivation has had a knock on effect into other curricular areas.

The support of the National Book Trust and Learning Teaching Scotland has meant that Julia Donaldson, author of 'The Gruffalo', has been able to join the project as a guest. Glow Meet has enabled her to work with all the pupils of the 5 schools at the same time, bringing her into the heart of our classrooms. We believe that after looking at this project, others schools will be able to develop and adapt our ideas to create projects of their own, whether for children in the nursery, primary or secondary sector.

SpeakersLynne Lewis, Principal Teacher, East Lothian Council

Speaker biographyBoth Lynne and Anne Louise have experience of teaching at all stages of the primary school. They are keen on bringing innovation into the classroom to help motivate the pupils they teach on a daily basis. In their role as principal teachers they are also carrying out the ongoing task of coaching other staff on the use and possibilities of GLOW within the primary setting. They support other staff as they also begin to deliver the curriculum using these new methods.
