| Seminar Description | “Learning mathematics develops logical reasoning, analysis, problem-solving skills and the ability to think in abstract ways, as well as offering opportunities for creativity.”
(Curriculum for Excellence : Mathematics Cover Paper) From the early stages onwards, children and young people should be given opportunities to develop their creativity and mathematical thinking. Joe and Barbara will reflect on how we can build on and develop current practice to ensure all young people can engage with learning experiences which will develop their confidence in these areas. The session will explore the features of a thinking classroom and will provide ideas on how to create such a learning environment where pupils are better motivated, more resilient, reflective and engaged in their learning. “Does teaching thinking improve results? It seems likely.”
(Steven Hastings TES 23 May, 2003) Drawing on research and examples of good practice, this session will highlight various approaches to learning and teaching which promote the development of these important life-skills. |
