Lochend Community High School is a modern, six-year, state funded non-denominational integrated community school serving Easterhouse in Glasgow. The roll is 833 with 65 FTE teaching staff. At 51.5 per cent, the FME is well above the national average. Pupils' attendance is below the national average, but it has improved steadily over the last three years. The staying-on rate is 40 per cent. Leaver destinations are: 8 per cent full-time higher education, 23 per cent full-time further education, 20 per cent training, 32 per cent employment.
A group of S3 pupils whose challenging behaviour is leading to underachievement is identified and, in consultation with parents, staff and pupils, it is agreed that this group should embark on an 'enhanced' curriculum in S3/S4.
The Youthstart programme is a one year, full-time college course designed as an alternative route to study National Qualifications. The programme offers development of core and vocational skills, ICT, numeracy, communication skills, PSE and a work placement. There is a pre-entry programme in the vocational areas, pupil interviews and a formal parents' evening. Careers information and ongoing support are provided by the college in partnership with the school. Pupils can choose between Catering and Hospitality, Hairdressing and Beauty and Construction as the basis for their vocational programme.
