Willie Rodger - Introduction

This case study features a project involving both secondary and primary pupils from nine schools across Scotland and the master printmaker Willie Rodger.

The project utilised the facilities of Glow Meet to link all nine schools with Willie in his studio. The project commenced with a Glow Meet printing masterclass, enabling pupils to watch and learn the process of printmaking from a genuine artist. From this tutorial the pupils were then given the task of creating a series of prints.

The six-week project with 165 pupils and eight different authorities involved pupils regularly uploading their work onto the National Expressive Arts Glow Group along with a commentary on how the image had been developed.

In addition to this, pupils were given the chance to comment on each other's work and take part in weekly chat sessions about the progress of their work.

The project brought the process of printmaking to life, allowing pupils to see at first hand an artist at work in a studio and to learn the process of printmaking from start to finish. As well as learning the printmaking process, pupils had the opportunity to analyse and critique their own work and the work of their peers, helping them to develop and improve their images.

The project shows how Curriculum for Excellence and Glow can be used together to assist pupils with the development of the four capacities.
