Focus of case study - Mysteries Inc: Mystery of The Mary Celeste

  •  Developing interdisciplinary learning
  •  Recognising personal achievement

This case study provides an in-depth look at one of the 11 participating schools in Mysteries Inc. The school, St Margaret’s RCPS, chose to investigate the Mystery of the Mary Celeste and constructed a debate on the existing theories surrounding its disappearance.

The case study exemplifies the following aspects of Building the Curriculum 3:

  • development of the four capacities
  • opportunities to develop skills for learning, life and work through strong links with the business community
  • strong emphasis on interdisciplinary learning and opportunities for personal achievement
  • second level draft experiences and outcomes are used for planning
  • the principles of curriculum design
  • literacy, numeracy and health and wellbeing across the curriculum
  • freedom and responsibility to meet the needs of children in their local communities.
