Stirling Council - Mysteries Inc

Focus of case study

  • Mysteries Inc - a collaborative approach
  • Developing interdisciplinary learning
  • Connecting the learning - Stirling Council

This case study explains developments which have been taking place in 11 of Stirling Council’s primary schools. The local authority initially worked with some individual schools and a cluster in session 2006-07, to develop an interdisciplinary approach through specific contexts. The following year an ambitious project aimed at encouraging collaborative working across schools was created. It became known as ‘Mysteries Inc’.

'Building the Curriculum 3' aspects

The case study exemplifies the following aspects of 'Building the Curriculum 3':

  • Opportunities to develop skills for learning, skills for life and skills for work through strong links with the business community
  • Strong emphasis upon interdisciplinary learning and opportunities for personal achievement
  • Second level draft experiences and outcomes used for planning
  • The principles for curriculum design
  • Literacy, numeracy, and health and wellbeing across the curriculum.

St Margaret’s RC Primary School, Cowie, was one of the schools participating in this project. A case study on this individual school exemplifies the process more fully.

‘This is a really good way of learning because there is more choice in it and the teacher doesn’t take over everything. Sometimes there are things you want to do more of or learn in a different way... ’ (Amy, Gargunnock Primary)
