St Columba’s High School is a six-year secondary school for Catholic pupils in Perth and Kinross. Situated in Perth, the school also draws pupils from the surrounding villages and as far afield as Auchterarder, Blairgowrie and Kinross. The school has a pleasant outlook towards the city’s North Inch, the River Tay and beyond. The present school roll is 565 pupils. It is recognised that St Columba’s has the worst provision of physical education facilities within the secondary sector in the local authority with only one 20 m gymnasium on-site and playing fields. Perth and Kinross has endeavoured to support the school through a Service Level Agreement which allows all schools in Perth access to all leisure facilities within Perth and Kinross as well as providing transport. The following case study exemplifies how a school with limited facilities delivers a varied and comprehensive programme of physical education to all pupils from S1 to S6 and makes particular reference to the innovative delivery in S5 and S6.
