Going boldly - conference for special schools

HM Inspectorate of Education and Learning and Teaching Scotland held a national Good Practice conference on Wednesday 5 November 2008 to celebrate good and improving practice in special schools and units in Scotland and to identify challenges for the future.

The conference brought together practitioners from special schools, units and other forms of provision for pupils with additional support needs to engage with three key questions:

  • How good are we now?
  • How good can we be?
  • How can we get there?

This conference gave participants the opportunity to

  • converse with other practitioners from across Scotland
  • share ideas and approaches
  • find out about good practice
  • debate the future direction
  • consider how to continue to improve special schools, units and other forms of provision for pupils with additional support needs in line with best practice.

The conference was aimed at headteachers and senior managers of special schools and units and education authority officers.

The programme included

  • an update on how well special schools, units and other forms of provision for pupils with additional support needs are doing, as reported by HMIE
  • a keynote address on how good special schools can be, and a wide range of events, displays, exhibitions conversations and debates.

Special schools and units and Curriculum for Excellence

Special schools can have an enabling role in taking forward Curriculum for Excellence, which aims to bring about transformational change and ensure the best possible education for every single child and young person. Improving children’s and young people’s experiences in special schools and units will contribute to ensuring an effective curriculum framework to meet the needs of all learners.

The conference also involved setting up a community of good practice online within Glow, where workshop presenters could continue to engage with practitioners to share and celebrate their good practice.
