About the nursery school

Sighthill Nursery School, situated in the north of Glasgow, provides education for children aged 3 to 5. It currently caters for children from 23 language backgrounds and a diversity of cultures. Sighthill is a very deprived area with a number of social and economic problems and the nursery endeavours to provide opportunities for whole community involvement.

Project aims

The staff were looking for opportunities to develop enterprise and citizenship. They also wished to provide opportunities for the community to get involved in the life of the nursery. And they wanted to raise money to fund a summer trip for the children and families who use the nursery.

After consultation with children and parents, they decided to hold a summer fair. The aims of the project were:

  • to build relations between all staff, children, families and the wider community
  • to involve children in an enterprise project
  • to involve the staff, children, families and wider community in the planning process
  • to provide an opportunity for families to interact outwith the nursery sessions and encourage parental involvement and support
