Jim Boyd initially qualified as a primary class teacher. He currently teaches at Scotstoun Primary in Glasgow. Scotstoun Primary has a roll of approximately 350 children, arranged in 13 classes, and is part of the Knightswood Leaning Community. Throughout his career he has developed a genuine interest in physical education and the benefits the subject can bring to children. As a primary classroom teacher he felt there were limited opportunities to develop his expertise. He welcomed the opportunity to undertake Basic Moves levels 1 and 2 training at Edinburgh University but this only served to whet his appetite for further study.
Then a fantastic opportunity arose in 2004 to become involved in the Postgraduate Diploma in Primary Physical Education at Glasgow University. The course was developed in partnership with Glasgow City Council and evolved from a perceived need to support primary teachers in the delivery of high quality physical education.
Following the successful completion of the course in June 2006, Jim approached the headteacher of Scotstoun to discuss the possibility of increasing his responsibility for the delivery of physical education within the school. The request coincided with the increase in teacher non-class contact time to two-and-a-half hours and the management team saw this as an excellent opportunity to provide class cover whilst also providing the children with the benefits that accrue from increased physical education. Further to this it would also enable the school to almost meet the Scottish Government’s 2008 target of two hours of quality physical education a week. The headteacher agreed and Jim started in August 2006.
