Show living cells using a camera and microscope

Ms Wood teaches biology to S4 pupils at Trinity Academy. In today’s class she introduces her pupils to the study of living cells. Using a microscope and a camera connected to a projector she can show the image of the cells on the interactive whiteboard.

Teacher profile

Ms Wood has been teaching for 29 years. She has been at Trinity Academy for 21 years and is currently teaching biology to S3-S6 pupils. 
Ms Wood has attended several ICT courses run by Edinburgh’s Information Technology Support Unit (ITSU), but otherwise her ICT skills are mostly self-taught. 

She uses ICT as much as possible where appropriate. She uses a microscope camera, a light projector and an interactive whiteboard to show magnified images of the dissection process and cell structure to her pupils. Ms Wood also uses Pasco sensors for data logging and CD-ROMs for different Biology topics.


School profile

Trinity Academy is near the coast in the north of Edinburgh. The school was founded in 1893 and today consists of an older three-storey building and a modern block. Trinity Academy has won several awards, including the European Curriculum Award, the Schools Curriculum Award and Language Works for Business.

There are 1010 pupils in the school, 120 of whom have free school lunches and 16 are recorded as having special educational needs. There are 16 pupils with English as their second language. 

There are approximately 300 PCs in the school, all connected in a local area network, and seven dedicated ICT rooms. There is an ICT coordinator, but this is not a full-time position. ICT training is available to teaching staff, with various in-service courses and Information Technology Service Unit (ITSU) programmes.
