Focus of case study

This case study describes developments in Rothes Primary School, Moray, during session 2007-08. It explains how, following a staff discussion, it was decided that teachers of each stage in the school would work with one of the new draft science outcomes, planning and working collaboratively. 

The purpose of this case study is to highlight the work done by nursery and Primary 1 staff and includes references to some of the features from 'Building the Curriculum 3' through the development of:

  • the four capacities
  • the seven principles for curriculum design
  • the ethos and life of the school
  • active learning
  • outdoor education
  • collaborative planning and working
  • nursery/Primary 1 transition.

School roll

As at November 2007, the school roll was approximately 130 primary pupils and 18 pre-school children. There were six primary classes and two nursery sessions - morning and afternoon. The class/stage allocation was as follows:

Nursery, Primary 1, Primary 2/3, Primary 3/4, Primary 5, Primary 6, Primary 7

School catchment area

The catchment area for Rothes Primary School is the parish of Rothes and the surrounding countryside, including the Glen of Rothes, Orton and the Craigellachie area on the west side of the River Spey.
