Shared Sharing Practice

Rothes P1/Nursery joint science project

Pupils with play-dough

This project enabled staff from both sectors to work collaboratively and use the science outcome chosen as a vehicle for planning and working together effectively. It also ensured that the outcome was the focus for curriculum areas and activities chosen and that this choice was made to ensure quality and manageability, rather than to include as much as possible.

Because of the great success of the project, Primary 1 classes and the nursery will continue to develop opportunities to work together and to embrace further aspects of Curriculum for Excellence. The very positive experiences highlighted above and the effective collaboration of everyone involved from both sectors and members of the local community will ensure that this type of project will continue to develop further in the future.

Some logistical aspects however will need to be addressed. Due to the number of children involved, adult support was crucial for the activities to run smoothly and this will have to be taken into consideration for future projects. The project also involved the use of the hall for the shared snack and some PE activities, which caused timetabling issues. Language and maths lessons continued as normal whilst other subjects were worked on in an interdisciplinary way.

The teachers were able to access resources from the Early Years team, and the local community in Rothes provided a wide variety of help, especially their time.
