Rothes P1/Nursery joint science project

  • This mini-project provided a context for strengthening transition from nursery into Primary 1.
  • Most of the nursery children knew the school and the surrounding area well.
  • Activities were carried out in the nursery, school classroom, playground, nursery garden, paddock and local environment, taking full advantage of all of the areas and space available.
  • The children were excited when taking part in the project and were disappointed when it ended.
  • It was found that the children were not reluctant to play outside in the rain due to the availability of waterproof suits and wellington boots, some of which were acquired from local charity shops.
  • The children learned to share resources, co-operate, and help each other as they played and learned together.

'Every day we had a snack with the nursery. We had fruit, toast, jam and honey. We met new people before they started school.'

'We painted the walls with our helpers - it dried because it was warm.'

'We made a windbreak for our plants to protect them from breaking in the wind.'

'We picked up weeds and worms in our garden, so that the tatties would grow.'

'I remember when we planted the tatties we found worms.'

'I liked planting the bulbs because they're going to be onions for tattie soup.'

'I really enjoyed making the frames with bark, shells, stones and moss.'

'It was fun - it was science, maths, gym, it was art, it was eating together, it was everything put together.'
