The Rainbow Light School

Uyeasound Primary School is a small island school in Unst, Shetland. It has faced many changes in the past three years. You can read about our journey, 'Freedom from Failure'.
We all face changes in the future as we engage with A Curriculum for Excellence - a curriculum based on shared values.

'The starting point for this process of change is the set of values which should underpin policies, practice and the curriculum itself.'

A Curriculum for Excellence: The Curriculum Review Group, 2004

Shared values

Uyeasound is a traditional Shetland community: of course we have shared values. It was not until the school was threatened with closure that we began to understand their importance. The impassioned speeches made by the community on the school's behalf celebrated and honoured those values:

TrustHopeRespect
JoyPeaceCare
LoveCommunityFairness
SelfCultureWork
DareEnvironment

Some would argue that environment is not a value but it was the only word that captured the central place held by our surroundings in the life of the Shetlander.

Our values are now central to everything that happens in our learning community. They are painted on a playground wall for everyone to see. These values are common to many faiths, creeds and communities. Placing values at the centre helped us to understand others and ourselves. We are not alone in realising their importance.

'Within the context of a school community, shared values give a sense of belonging and should underpin all aspects of its life.'
