PowerPoint resources about suffrage for history

preparation

Donald Morrison, head of history at Ellon Academy, has created a huge range of Microsoft PowerPoint resources for teaching history at secondary level. In this Higher class on the nineteenth-century suffrage movement, his presentation includes lists of relevant web pages, an analysis of exam questions that have come up in recent years, and content-based slides, which he uses as a basis for discussion with pupils.

Teacher profile

Donald Morrison has been teaching for 22 years and has been head of history at Ellon Academy for 12 years. Ellon Academy is the third school he has taught at and he is currently teaching 15–18 year olds. There are four members of staff in the History Department, two of whom work half time.

Since the day the interactive whiteboard arrived in his classroom, Donald has invested a vast amount of time in researching, producing and organising material to use in his teaching. He now has over 2000 relevant web pages identified and electronically filed, as well as the slides he has created covering different topics. The overriding aim is to improve pupils’ attainment.

Donald has had formal training in basic and advanced Microsoft Office, and in basic web skills. Otherwise he is entirely self taught.

Ellon Academy is situated in the small town of Ellon, to the north of Aberdeen. Its 1400 pupils come mainly from outlying rural areas. There are 80 pupils with special educational needs and 20 who have free school lunches. Three pupils speak English as a second language. In 2002, Ellon Academy won a Scottish Executive Award for Innovation and Excellence.

The school has over 300 PCs with a broadband connection. There is an ICT room, but each classroom also has a PC. New Opportunities Fund (NOF) and European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) courses are available to staff.
