Making PowerPoint shows about World War II

Introduction

Chris Latimer teaches a composite P6/P7 class at Crossmichael Primary. In today’s history class the topic is World War 2. The pupils are creating slide shows using Microsoft PowerPoint. Chris teaches the pupils how to add movie and sound files to their presentations. In previous lessons they used a digital video camera and filmed themselves introducing their presentation.

Teacher profile

Chris Latimer has been teaching for 16 years in six different schools. He has been working at Crossmichael Primary since 1999 and he is currently teaching a composite P6/P7class. Chris has attended some in-service regional ICT training, but otherwise most of his skills are self-taught. 

Chris tries to use ICT across the curriculum when appropriate. He finds it particularly useful when teaching environmental studies, mathematics and language. Overall, Chris views ICT as a way to motivate pupils in their learning. 

School profile

Crossmichael Primary School is situated in the small village of Crossmichael in Dumfries and Galloway, which sits on the banks of the picturesque Loch Ken. Crossmichael Primary serves the villages of Crossmichael, Parton, Glenlochar, Laurieston and surrounding areas. Many pupils are transported from outlying areas by bus or taxi. 

There are currently 57 pupils in the school, six of whom have free school lunches and two are registered with special educational needs. There are no pupils who speak English as a second language. 

There are 10 PCs and eight laptops in the school, all connected in a local network. Each classroom is provided with a PC. The school does not have an ICT coordinator, but ICT support is available from the local education authority. ICT training is available for staff, with courses such as those provided by the Educational ICT Company (EdICT).
