Inspired by EU Minichefs’ Day: A Day of Healthy Eating and Cooking with Children, staff at Yester Primary planned three weeks of health and international education activities. This fitted in well with the school’s plans for its Healthy Passport ICT project (linking Yester Primary with a Finnish and a French primary school).
Yester Primary School is situated in the picturesque village of Gifford, which nestles at the foot of the Lammermuir Hills in East Lothian. There is a nursery with 32 children and seven straight classes from P1-P7. The current school roll, including the nursery, is around 197.
Teachers Fiona Edwards and Michael Purves were given time out of class to plan the activities, which took place in October and November 2007.
Our plan for the three weeks was as follows:We decided that we would try to have as many activities as possible connected to our link schools in Finland, France and South Africa, in order to allow our pupils to learn about the culture, heritage and traditions of these countries. We wanted to involve children, parents, staff and community members who have links with European countries and utilise their knowledge, skills and talents as much as possible.
While planning the activities we focused on Curriculum for Excellence and its four capacities: we wanted all our pupils (and staff) to be successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors.
