Within the Lochend Learning Community, the Glasgow City Council ‘Big Breakfast’ provides a nutritious breakfast with access to additional health-enhancing opportunities. One of these opportunities is that two mornings a week there are exercise sessions for the children to attend following their breakfast.
This was originally piloted using coaches but has since been rolled out to all seven primary schools in the cluster by involving the local community as physical activity volunteers. The volunteers are parents of children who attend the school and sign up to be trained and Disclosure Scotland checked.
Support, funding and mentorship are organised in collaboration with the steering group, schools, and on the ground with the Active Schools Co-ordinator.
