Shared Sharing Practice

Linlithgow Bridge Saving the Planet

Introduction

Pupils from P5/6 at Linlithgow Bridge Primary School linked with the Eco Committee to raise funds for the further development of the school wildlife garden.

The pupils had previously gained a good understanding of critical thinking and enjoyed collaborative learning, which they recognised as essential for entrepreneurial activities.

Aims

The aim was to encourage the children to take responsibility for the content, management, design and finance of the project.

The idea of producing a CD of songs with a global, eco-friendly link came after discussion with the specialist music teacher, Irene Rendell, who composed the music and lyrics. A total of £937 was raised.

Method

The pupils:

  • sought business advice from the Bank of Scotland on setting up Bridge Business Enterprise to take the project forward
  • used ICT skills to design the cover and negotiated a competitive price with local printers, KMP Printing Company
  • toured Craigsfarm Recording Studios, Livingston, to see how the studio would record and burn the CD
  • planned and hosted the launch of the CD, which featured a live performance of the title track

Outcomes

Headteacher Hazel Clarke says:

The work promoted personal development and provided opportunities for pupils to collaborate as a team and to gain an insight in running a business as part of Learning for Life. Pupils are extremely proud of their achievements and self-esteem is high.
